Science Course Descriptions

Physical Science
Unit: 1
Grade: 9
Prerequisite(s): Science 8

Physical Science topics include: classification of matter- properties of matter, elements and the periodic table; compounds and bonding; patterns in matter-families of elements. Other topics include: motion, force, work, light, sound, and energy resources- heat, electricity, and nuclear energy.

Biology
Unit: 1
Grade: 10-12
Prerequisite(s): Physical Science of Teacher permission.

Biology is an introduction to the study of living things. Emphasis is on understanding the basic life processes shared by all organisms. Topics covered first semester are the scientific method, materials of life, cell structure and function, energy for life, cell division, and genetics. Topics covered second semester include evolution, adaptations, classification, disease, population biology, and ecosystems.

Chemistry
Unit: 1
Grade: 11-12
Prerequisite(s): Algebra I or Teacher Permission

Chemistry is the study of the structures and properties of matter. The central theme of the course is that the properties of matter are a consequence of the structure of matter. Chemical theories are presented along with quantitative problems. Topics covered the first semester include measurement types of matter, chemical formulas, the mole, chemical reactions, atomic structure, and the periodic table. Topics covered in the second semester include periodic properties, typical elements, chemical bonding, kinetic theory, the states of matter, the gas laws, solution, acids, bases and salts and oxidation-reduction. Laboratory work is emphasized.

Physics
Unit: 1
Grade: 11-12
Prerequisite(s): Algebra

Physics is the science that examines the relationship of matter and energy. It emphasize the basic physical laws and forces that govern the universe. Topics covered on the first semester include measurement, motion, dynamics, momentum, gravitation work and energy. Topics covered in the second semester include heat, kinetic theory, waves, light, electricity, and magnetism. Laboratory work is emphasized.

Anatomy & Physiology
Unit: 1
Grade: 11-12
Prerequisite(s): Biology I

Anatomy and physiology are the study of the structure and function of the human body at all levels of organization from biological molecules to organ systems. There is and emphasis on laboratory work. Evaluation of current research and issues related to the health field will be included.

Botany
Unit: 1/2
Grade: 11-12
Prerequisite(s): Biology I

Botany is the study of plants and plant-like organisms. The course include a treatment of plant names and classification and properties of plant names and classification and properties of the various groups of plants and fungi. Emphasis will be on the structure and function of flowering plants. Laboratory experiments using plants are stresses and each student will make a collection of flowering plants.

Zoology
Unit: 1/2
Grade: 11-12
Prerequisite(s): Biology I

Zoology is the study of animals. The course will include a treatment of the common characteristics of animals, the evolution of animal diversity, classification and major phyla of animals and classes of vertebrates will be studied. There will be emphasis on laboratory work.
